I want to start this blog on vitamins and nutrition talking briefly about the importance of vitamins. Vitamins, as the name implies, are essential for the correct functioning of the body. Luckily, we are “designed” to get them naturally through our diet and lifestyle.
Most vitamins are acquired through food, but there is an exception: vitamin D, also called the “sunshine vitamin” because we get it through exposure to the Sun’s rays. When we lack of enough vitamin levels, we’ll develop vitamin deficiencies, and the case of vitamin D for example, it will lead to vitamin D diseases such as rickets and osteomalacia.
Vitamin absorption can also be affected by some medications, conditions and well, general lifestyle. Remember that vitamins are important but everything is part of our whole! Vitamins are involved each type of them in different functions of the body, be sure to acquire them through your food. If you are vegan you may suffer from a B12 deficiency, this can solved by taking supplements or eating fortified cereals.
